When damage or decay has reached a point where restorative measures aren’t going to be helpful, and there is less than half of the healthy tooth remaining, a dental crown is the necessary next step. Fortunately, we can replace your existing crowns or fillings, or provide a new crown that is undetectable and looks and feels like a real tooth.
A crown is simply a “cap” which is tooth-shaped and reestablishes the appropriate shape, strength, and size with the rest of the teeth. Unlike an inlay and onlay, crowns cover the entire visible areas of the tooth right up to the gum line. There are many situations where missing and broken teeth can make it difficult to speak, eat, or want to smile. Most crowns only last between five and 15 years, but using the latest in technological solutions, ours are reliably lasting between 20 and 30 years.
Crown Procedure at Lifetime Family Dental
Crown replacements typically require two visits to the office. In the first, x-rays identify the details of the existing problem, all the way down to the root. This will reveal whether the decay has reached the bone and root and a root canal would be required before the crown. We use impressions and scans to create an image of the customized crown. And when you return for a second visit, we will use the latest in bonding technology to cement the crown in place where it fits like a puzzle piece with the existing tooth.
Crowns are very common and effective way of solving advanced problems with particular teeth. Dr. Gudger and the Lifetime Family Dental team is experienced at this procedure and can determine if it is right for you. Call us today and we will set up a consultation to consider your options.
