It’s never fun to be told you need a root canal as they come with the perception that they will be painful and take time to heal. But, root canals performed correctly have minimal pain and heal quickly. At Lifetime Family Dental we are experts in the field of emergency dental care and procedures. Let Lifetime Family Dental properly perform your root canal — we’ll make it a seamless experience so you can go pain-free and have a healthy mouth going forward.
How do you know if you need a root canal?
Many patients ask how they know if they need a root canal versus a cavity filling. While a definite diagnosis will be confirmed by your dentist, symptoms of a root canal are extreme tooth pain, a broken tooth, and a big cavity in your tooth that is affecting your nerves. Root canals are generally scheduled procedures, but if you begin to experience acute, unbearable pain, they can become emergency dental procedures. This is why it’s important to see your dentist when you initially feel any uncommon pain.
Cost & Insurance
The most common question we receive pertaining to root canals is cost. When you first meet and have your initial consultation at Lifetime Family Dental, we address custom treatment plans and the costs associated with those, depending on the severity of your case. This will give you the chance to ask questions about pricing. The second most common question is, does insurance cover this procedure? The answer is yes; most insurances cover this at a percentage. But be sure to double check with your insurance provider to see how much you will have to pay out of pocket, if anything.
Procedure & Recovery Period
A root canal procedure is the process of removing injured or rotted teeth from your mouth, and replacing that space with a filling. This process relieves pain and helps the teeth become healthy and function normally again. We perform all of our procedures right in our Lifetime Family Dental Raleigh office location and the length of each procedure varies depending on the patient. With premolars, the procedure normally takes less than 3 hours, and with molars, it can take anywhere from 3-4 hours. We use and administer local anesthetics, pending no patient allergies.
Each patient is different when it comes to the length of recovery. It depends on the severity of the issue and the extensiveness of the surgery. While you won’t feel any pain during the procedure, you may feel soreness on and around the tooth for a few days post-surgery. Many of our patient’s recovery period lasts a couple of days.
At Lifetime Family Dental we want to ensure you are as comfortable and informed as possible pre and post-surgery. Our office staff knows the ins and outs of root canals and can happily answer any and all questions.
While root canal procedures are not painful, they can be awkward and occasionally uncomfortable and even anxiety inducing for some patients. At Lifetime Family Dental we provide services for our patients during surgery to calm their nerves and help them feel more comfortable. These services include relaxing music, blankets, TV streaming services, and even IV sedation.
IV sedation, while not the first resort, is another form of anesthetics where patients are put under the influence of a sedation drug — this is sometimes referred to as “twilight dentistry.” Patients who have particularly high nerves during procedures normally opt for this. Ask one of our staff today for more information about IV sedation.
Additionally, Ava, our beloved therapy dog, is a pocket beagle who loves to greet all of oru patients. She is no doubt a member of the Lifetime Family Dental family and can sit on your lap and keep you company to help calm your nerves during root canals!
At Lifetime Family Dental we take the business of root canals seriously so that you can undergo the procedure worry-free. To schedule an appointment, please reach out to us at (919) 741-4343.
